Bridging the Funding Gap

Jersey City Public Schools face ongoing financial challenges that threaten the quality of education for thousands of students.

Drastic Budget Cuts Impacting Schools

Since 2017, the state has cut nearly $300 million in total funding from Jersey City Public Schools. These cuts have led to fewer resources, larger class sizes, and reduced support services for students.

Jersey City Public Schools Receive Less State Aid

Currently, Jersey City Public Schools receive less state aid than districts with smaller enrollments and fewer economically disadvantaged students. This funding disparity places an undue burden on local resources and limits opportunities for students.

Funding Cuts Based on Perceived Wealth

The reduction in state funding is based on the growing property values of Jersey City rather than the actual financial needs of its students. Many families remain economically disadvantaged despite the city’s rising wealth.

Charter School Funding Imbalance

The state currently provides approximately $130 million in funding to JCPS but mandates that the district transfer around $170 million to charter schools. This creates a significant financial strain, diverting resources away from traditional public schools.

Majority of Students Are Economically Disadvantaged

Two-thirds (63%) of Jersey City Public Schools students are classified as economically disadvantaged, yet funding does not reflect the needs of these students.

Disproportionate Impact on Minority Students

While Census data shows that 21.5% of Jersey City’s population is Black and 27.2% is Hispanic, the student population is 27.8% Black and 38.5% Hispanic. This highlights that funding inequities disproportionately affect minority students.
